This is an adult dun pattern for Hexagenia limbata, the Great Olive-Winged Drake designed by Alan Nealley. The Hex is also locally known and wrongly named the Michigan Caddis since it is a mayfly and what a mayfly it is. With a size range of from 17-40 mm it is the largest species of mayfly we have. Although the Hex hatch can run sporadically from June until September they can become very dense for about a two week period, producing literally thousands of duns. They hatch almost always at night as this species avoids daylight hatching however on cool cloudy days they can be fooled into hatching before dusk. Due to their large size H. limbata nymphs have a difficult time with emergence and often spend several minuets on the surface struggling to be released from their nymphal casing. This is when they are most susceptible to trout who key in on the large morsel. Big fish love the Hex hatch and will feed well into the night gorging themselves on the plentiful duns. This pattern casts a nice silhouette on the water that matches the adult dun very well.
