Poxyback Hex Emerger
This is Mike Mercer's famous poxyback technique of nymph pattern construction applied to an emerger.
|
This is the emerger pattern for Hexagenia limbata, the Great Olive-Winged Drake locally known and wrongly named as the Michigan Caddis since it is a Mayfly. This particular pattern is a creation of Mike Mercer who has taken his successful Poxyback technique of nymph construction and applied it to an emerger pattern. Hex hatches appear for quite some time from June until September however they can be very dense for about a two week period. Most hatches always take place well into the night as this species avoids daylight hatching. Due to their large size H. limbata nymphs have a difficult time with emergence and often spend several minuets on the surface struggling to be released from their nymphal casing. This is when they are most susceptible to trout who key in on the large morsel. This pattern can be very productive just prior to an impending Hex hatch.
