Dr. Hisao Ishigaki is a professor of the Faculty of Management and Information Sciences at the Aichi Institute of Technology and is considered to be one of the current leading authorities on Tenkara in Japan. This pattern that bears his name is reportedly the only fly that Dr. Ishigaki has fished with for over a decade. This simple design made only of silk thread and reverse tied hackle can be fished as a dry fly, emerger or as a wet fly fully supporting the Tenkara credo of simplicity. Dr. Ishigaki has tied variations of his basic Tenkara pattern by changing thread color and hackle choice as well as hook size. We have imitated the various Ishigaki style flies we could find creating a short and simple assortment of colors and hackle variations to allow for the variation of regional hatches. Our color variations are available tied on high quality Gamakatsu R10-BN hooks in sizes 12-14-16. In the case of this pattern it is all about the hook, the R10-BN has a radical retainer bend that really holds fish well even though it is barbless. We think this is the best fish holding barbless hook in the business with a point that gives a new meaning to the word sharp.
