This particular pattern is a creation of Mike Mercer who has taken his successful Poxyback technique of nymph construction and applied it to an emerger pattern. Mayfly hatches appear for quite some time from march until September depending on the species. Many mayfly nymphs have a difficult time with emergence and often spend several minuets on the surface struggling to be released from their nymphal casing. This is when they are most susceptible to trout who key in on the large morsel. Emerger patterns can be very productive just prior to an impending hatch.
