Here we have Captain Jaime Boyle’s famous squid pattern that has made a reputation fishing the rips off Martha’s Vineyard. Named after the red cans of Budweiser consumed while tying flies for the squid run this is a large fly with a big hook that casts a life-like squid profile. It is well designed to hold up to the strong currents that exist where it is often fished. It is made of a synthetic material that sheds water quickly giving the fly less weight for ease of casting. Fishing the squid run requires this fly to be fished deep with 350 – 400 grain sinking lines or shooting heads and a short 6 -7 ft leader. Sinking lines of that weight are heavy and we usuallly recommend fishing with a 10 weight fly rod to manage the extra load better. The three color schemes it comes in offer you choices to not only match the hatch but also compensate for light conditions, fishing depth and water clarity. All in all this is one fine squid pattern that can and should be used in places other than the Northeast. We recently used this pattern successfully in the waters off Baja for Yellowtail and Tuna while fishing floating kelp paddies over structure.
