American Shad (Alosa sapidissima) are native to the east coast of the US and were transplanted in the Sacramento River delta in 1871. They now populate large rivers up and down both coasts. They are plankton feeders that primarily eat numerous small crustaceans such as copepods, mysids and cladocerans. Flies are most effective on Shad when fished at their eye level in the same depth of the water column that the fish are traveling in. Light plays a significant part to the equation as to what depth the fish are at. The lighter or brighter the day the deeper in the water column the fish will be. Shad are fond of small (size 4 & 6) bright flies that contain colors of fluorescent orange and chartreuse. The Shad Flies we have here seem to be the best producers on a consistent basis regardless of location or time of year.
