Micro Spaun Egg Fly
This is one of the new look egg patterns that is proving very productive in Alaska and the Midwest.

Micro Spawn is one of the newer twists at redefining the classic egg fly pattern. It is designed to imitate a small spuan sac and is very similar in appearance to Sucker (Genus Catostomus) roe. Although Steelhead do not actually feed during their spawning run it is theorized that they hit flies out of aggression and/or that as fry they are genetically coded to feed on aquatic insects and salmon eggs and carry that trait foreword as adults. The rule of thumb for choosing egg patterns depends on current water conditions. If the water flow is high and discolored use large flies and very bright fluorescent colors. Conversely, if the water flow is low and clear use smaller flies and pale colors. When fish are spawning in a river or stream most of the various other fish species will feed on the opportunistic windfall of food. This means that all species of trout in that given system will be feeding on eggs. A productive way to fish Micro spawn during a steelhead or Salmon run is to use a tandem rig with the egg pattern tied two to three feet in front of a nymph pattern. Add enough weight in front of the egg pattern to keep it down based on current flow. We are currently updating our inventory and not accepting new orders. Please check back at a later date. |
