Wet Fly Patterns

Salmon Wet Flies of today are descendents of hair wing conversions of the classic full dress feather wing patterns of the 1800’s. Classic Atlantic Salmon patterns like Green Highlander, Black Dose, Jack Scott and Orange Blossom all underwent a face lift and were converted to hair wing wet flies as a matter of practicality.

On the West Coast and at a much later date in time, Steelhead anglers from the start began using hair wing wet flies lacking the traditional mind set of the Eastern Atlantic Salmon tiers. Steelhead patterns flourished quickly and departed from the classic style wet fly look into new and bold designs and colors.

The West Coast influence gave birth to Comet and Optic style patterns that gained in popularity quickly along with sparse bucktails, spey and prawn style flies. Collectively we have quite a diverse universe of Salmon/Steelhead wet flies cataloged here a testament to the two vary different cultures.

Brad's Bratt Pattern Recipe: Hook- TMC7999, Thread- Black 6/0, Head- Lacquered Black 6/0, Wing- Two-thirds natural white bucktail on bottom with one-third dyed orange bucktail on top, Hackle- Brown tied in sparse rear facing collar, Body- Front half red poly yarn rear orange poly yarn, Ribbing- Flat gold tinsel, Butt- Flat gold tinsel, Tail- Orange and white bucktail hairs mixed.
