Searching Patterns

Searching patterns or attractor patterns as they are sometime known are tied in not only dry patterns but also nymphs and streamers. As dry flies, these patterns are often big and bulky looking often tied with bright colors such as red, orange and yellow. These patterns are also usually high floating dries with thick collar wings of hair and hackle. Pictured here is the Humpy or Goofus Bug as it is often called an excellent example of a searching pattern created in California by an unknown tier.

That being said, Adams the universal mayfly pattern is also classified as a Searching pattern since it does not represent an exact aquatic insect species but more or less looks like many species. Adams works so well as a Searching pattern because it looks so much like an insect. Within the Recipe Library of Searching patterns we have listed some of the greatest dry flies of all time. Names like Adams, Royal Coachman, Wulff, Elk Hair Caddis, Humpy and Stimulator all belong in the Fly Hall of Fame.
